Handwoven cotton towels
Towels for the bath, the beach and the kitchen, woven by hand in Barrydale.
Our towels are woven on hand looms in Barrydale, in the Klein Karoo, from unbleached cotton grown in South Africa. There are four sizes: large for the bath or the beach, medium for a rail, small with a loop for the kitchen, and face cloths in sets of three. Each product page names the weavers who make it.

How they are made
more than 1,400 throws of the shuttle
One of our beach towels takes more than 1,400 throws of the flying shuttle, and after every throw the weaver beats the thread into place by hand. Ten weavers make our towels. Shannon, Lusinda and Miriam weave most of the large ones. Vuyo, Surellen and Miriam weave the medium ones, and Jackie, Temmy, Perci, Matty and Lizzy the small ones. Temmy says what he enjoys most is the “physical and rhythmical nature of weaving”. The cotton is grown and spun in South Africa. Before a towel is packed, it is washed hot, tumble dried, ironed and checked by hand, so it will not shrink at home.

Which towel?
Large towels are 85 x 160 cm, for the bath, the pool or the beach. The Country towel comes with stripes at each end, stripes along its full length or fine pinstripes, at R629. The Contemporary towel has variegated stripes in Charcoal, Indigo or Stone, at R769. Medium towels are 50 x 80 cm hand towels, made to hang on a rail or ring, so they have no loop. Small towels are 45 x 60 cm with a hanging loop, for the kitchen or the bathroom. The Small Country Towel, at R179, is our best-selling towel. Face cloths are 30 x 30 cm and come in sets of three. The Contemporary towels also come in pairs woven in inverse colours, in all three sizes.
Washing a new towel
Wash it once at 60°C for better absorption. After that, wash at 40°C, then air dry or tumble dry. Every towel is pre-shrunk before it leaves us.
Handwoven in South Africa
Every towel is woven by hand from South African cotton at our Weavery in Barrydale, then sent door to door by courier. Delivery anywhere in South Africa is free on orders over R800. We also deliver to the United Kingdom, the United States and 11 countries in Europe.
Questions
Which towel size do I need?
For the bath, the pool or the beach, choose a large towel (85 x 160 cm). A medium towel (50 x 80 cm) hangs on a rail or ring, and a small towel (45 x 60 cm) has a loop for a hook. Face cloths are 30 x 30 cm.
Do the towels shrink?
No. Every towel is pre-shrunk with a hot wash and a tumble dry, then ironed and checked by hand before it is packed. Wash a new towel once at 60°C for better absorption, then at 40°C.
How long will my towels take to arrive?
Most orders take 10 to 14 days to weave, then 3 to 5 days in transit. A towel marked as woven to order can take up to four weeks, so if you need it by a certain date, ask us before you order.
